Creating Talismans to Ensure the Proper Spirit Appears

This article is a continuation of my previous work titled “On Agrippa’s ‘Of the calculating Art of such names by the tradition of the Cabalists’” and assumes the spirit-names are derived through the methods explained therein.

When a Mage is open and engaging directly with entities, it is important to be able to identify and verify that the spirit is the one the Mage intended to call – not a possible demonic imposter. This is a rare occurrence, especially if the practitioner is diligent about the consecration and maintenance of the space in which they are working. Luckily, this is easily done through the creation of a talisman – the process is fairly easy and adds an extra layer of certainty when working with new spirits. They can also be used as a kind of “speed dial” once initial contact has been made, making communion with a particular spirit much more convenient.

This specific method only works with “good” spirits, that meaning names created through using “The Entrance of Good” – evil spirits are confused and repelled by palindrome squares.

First, start by drawing a 3×3 grid, placing the three letters of the spirit name (without a suffix) around the outside edge of the square, starting from two diagonally opposite corners. The center of each outside row and column should match as should the top right to the bottom left corner, and the top left to the bottom right, leaving the center blank.

Second, calculate the neurological total of your name. This is done by converting the individual letters to numbers using this chart, adding them together to reach an initial total, then adding the individual digits together to reach a final total. This is the “magic constant” of your square.

Next, solve for the middle value. Find the total of your middle letter twice (the total of the center column and row while it still has a blank spot). Take this initial total and subtract it from the initial total from the previous step, if the difference is 1-9 or divisible by 10, simply find the corresponding letter. If the difference is greater than 9 and not divisible by 10, reduce the total of the two middle letters, and subtract it from the reduced total from the previous step, then assign to an appropriate letter. You must make sure that when you have finished, each row and column results in the same magic constant.

If you would like to add color to your talisman, color each square with a color appropriate to the number of the letter found inside.

On the reverse side, draw a grid with the appropriate number of square for the Magic Square corresponding to the Planetary Presidency of the Spirit you intend to call. Using this square, determine a sigil by connecting the letters of the spirits full name (three letters + suffix). Color this side the appropriate color for the planet the square corresponds to, using a color that corresponds to the ruling planet of the Zodiac Intelligence of the Spirit.

This talisman is essentially a copy of the Spirit’s business card – one side providing the name and qualities of the spirit, the other a reflection of what I like to think of as it’s “energy signature”. The talisman itself should leak a subtle energy identical to the spirit it represents – by comparing this energy to the feeling that occurs as a spirit appears, a Mage can determine the spirit’s identity. Once initial ritual contact with a spirit has been made and a relationship established, these talismans can also be used to contact the spirit directly either for communication or use of their gifts/energy, activated through triggers including prayer, mantra, mudra, meditation, or idiosyncrasy.

I hope this article has been useful and all readers were able to find something they could use!
